The Recommendation
in which Ali means well, and hands his friend a mountain
Every story has an instigator. Ours is Ali — a man who reads everything. Literary fiction, comics, manga, the back of a cereal box if the prose holds up. He is the friend who answers “what should I read next?” before you finish asking.
One day the question came from Faizan, who had only just started reading. And Ali did what Ali always does — he handed him a mountain. The Brothers Karamazov. 796 pages of Dostoevsky, widely considered one of the greatest novels ever written, and not widely considered a warm-up.
Chapter II
The Dictionary
in which the story is interrupted, repeatedly, by English
Faizan tried. He genuinely tried. But every page ran the same loop: read a line, hit a word, open the dictionary, lose the thread, start again. Perspicacityfancy word for a sharp eye. that’s it. that’s the whole note.. Obsequioussomeone who agrees too much. every office has one.. Verisimilitudewhen fiction feels true. this word itself feels like fiction.. And the whole time, one of the greatest stories ever told sat waiting — a murder, three brothers, a terrible father — with the vocabulary standing guard between Faizan and all of it.
He put the book down. He picked it back up. He put it down again — this time onto the pile that guilt is made of. The bookmark stopped on page 127. It would not move again for years.

The Bookmark
in which the real culprit is finally identified
Years later, the two of them looked at that bookmark and understood what it actually marked. Faizan never failed the book — the edition failed him. It is the most common way readers quit, in every language: not boredom, not attention spans — vocabulary.
The wall was the language. It was never the story.
